Printmaking - Etching

In the studio we have the facilities to do etching which is an intaglio printmaking technique. We use a plate covered evenly with an acid resistant wax, known as 'ground'. We then draw the image with etching tools, roulettes and anything else that removes the ground from the plate.

The marks and lines we draw into the ground reveal bare metal and when we place the plate into an acid bath, the acid 'bytes' the exposed areas.

We place the plate and the paper together through the etching press, to create the finished print. We have experimented with many ways of achieving etched textures that give an exciting variety of finished prints.
